lisa + malcolm {love shoot}

He attended a training in Chicago; he met her.
He went home to Houston; she packed her bags and followed her heart.
And as they say, the rest is history.

I had the pleasure to photograph Lisa and Malcolm while I was in Houston last week, and these two love birds are so full of life, and so incredibly in love. I mean, the intro to their website was summarized in one sentence : I LOVE THIS GIRL!!!
How sweet is that?

Lisa and Malcolm decided to shoot at the project row houses in Houston’s Third Ward. According to the website, Project Row Houses is a coalition of local artists who come together in 1993 to save twenty-two identical shotgun houses slated for demolition. These 520 square foot row houses were built in the 1940s, and were typical construction in African American communities of the segregated South and are iconic in their repeated geometric forms. In the last 25 years, Project Row Houses has expanded from the original 22 houses to 50 buildings spread over eight blocks. These structures are now used for art galleries, arts-education programming, artists’ residences and low income housing.

We took a break sipping cocktails, chatting and getting to know each other before heading to downtown Houston for more photos.

Enjoy and share!

nature hike

Last Friday I went on a nature hike with Jim, who is a Biology teacher, nature lover and hardcore nature photographer. This is my first time shooting nature macro and I have so much to learn!

We saw quite a few bugs and a lot of mushrooms. : )

The wasp above, according to Jim’s blog post, is called Pelecinus polyturator. How awesome is the name?

Here’s Jim, concentrating on shooting a bee. I remember when I first met him in 2009, he told me about his love for nature photography, where he keeps people out of his shots, while I put people in my shots. So here I am, putting Jim in my shot.

All photos were shot with my Sigma 50mm f2.8 macro lens.

I told Jim I wanted to photograph mushrooms and he found quite a few for me. So there I was, shooting mushrooms like I’ve never seen a mushroom before.

Giant mushroom.

And how about a black and white one?

Please head over to Jim’s amazing blog to see more of his work! I can’t help but wonder, if I had a Biology teacher as enthusiastic as Jim is, my whole life could be a different story. He is so passionate about teaching and the nature, it’s such an honor to be shooting with him. Thanks, Jim!

warmly,
Ai Ling

Jim - Great photos! I can’t wait for the next time!!

Ryan Walsh - “Alot to learn” – I think you got it! Great shots.

Ai Ling - Hi Jim! Yes, we should plan for another hike.

Thanks, Ryan.

Vanessa - wowowowow. these are just beautiful and so fun to see you shooting something so different than your normal.
Great work Ai Ling! (as always.)

Ai Ling - Thanks, Vanessa. It’s refreshing to shoot something different for sure! I miss the flickr days…

Sherri - These are great, Ai Ling! I love the mushroom pics.
